There are bad bosses and there are bad bosses. At least that’s what professionals who never had a chance of being a boss will tell you.
So if you happen to be one of the lucky ones to be referred to as Boss by someone, it’s time to earn the respect and for a change, be a good boss. For starters, rid yourself off of the criminally discouraging lines that bosses often throw at their employees:
1. Sorry, There's Nothing I Can Do
You are the boss. Employees expect that there should be nothing you can’t do (yeah that’s expecting a little too much, but don’t bosses do the same?). If you really can’t solve the problem the way your subordinate expects, talk to him. Discuss a way out.2. Things Have Always Been Like This
So you have surrendered yourself to the situation, and you want your employee to do the same. This statement would just kill your employees respect for you, particularly if he has come up with an idea better than the way things have been run till now.Image Credit: Shutterstock
3. You Are Plain Lucky to Get A Bonus
While you might be ‘supervising’ everything, you got to acknowledge that it is the people under you that are making money for your enterprise. They deserve every penny of bonus coming their way.4. No One Else Has A Problem
May be most of them have, they just don’t have guts to come forward. The best way forward would be to discuss it with the team to check if they share the same view.5. Other Companies Only Give Cups For Diwali
If your employees aren’t allowed to draw comparison between your firm and the other ones, why should you do the same. There are a whole lot of perks that other companies provide to their employees which you don’t.Image Credit: Shutterstock
6. If You Don't Like It, Work Somewhere Else
To say that you are being rude would be an understatement if you say this. But that’s not even the point. Your employee is stressed out and with such statements, you are not helping in any way.7. We Are Doing Some Cost-Cutting. You Won’t Be Fired, But We Are Cutting A Portion From Your Salary
You haven’t managed the organisation’s budget wisely, and that’s your problem. Why should employees bear the brunt of it?8. I Pay Your Salary. You Have To Do What I Say
That’s reminiscent of the slave-era. Period.Image Credit: Shutterstock
9. I Don’t Want To Hear It
You are also being paid a salary by your organisation and your job is to listen to your employee.10. Personal Issues Cannot Be Brought To Work
Yeah you almost jumped off your chair to vouch for that. But admit it — it’s unrealistic to expect it from anyone.Yes, you are a boss and you really don’t need to put yourself in your junior’s shoes to understand their troubles, but you can guide them and lead by example.
